Fertiliser response and crop growth is controlled by three main factors which are able to be managed:-
1) Radiation – interception of light is controlled by leaf area duration i.e. pasture covers & planting date.
2) Moisture – soil moisture content is not normally limiting in winter, irrigation mitigates summer drought.
3) Nutrient- ryegrass will grow at 6°C given adequate supply of the correct nutrients. Strategic nutrient management is the most effective tool available to optimise crop yield.
